One of the finest examples of a "ball in box" style carved whimsy I have come across, this piece features a hinged anchor with beautifully carved crown and two heart shaped flukes. The head and stock are connected to a ring that is attached to a carved ball in box / ball in cage. 9 x 3 x 1.5 inches.
Colloquially called a "Whimsy" because it serves no practical function other than as a whimsical object, this charming piece of American folk art appears unrefined upon first glance. Whimsies, however, are typically whittled from one continuous piece of wood, making them far more complex than they reveal. There is a long history of these objects being created by soldiers and sailors but the art of whittling is as old and wide reaching as you can imagine.
Given the nautical imagery it is possibly sailor made. Judging from the rich patina and detailing this piece is certainly vintage and possibly antique.

The piece I bought is equal parts whimsical as it is cool! The HighTramp team was so incredibly helpful when I asked a bunch of questions.
